I don’t even know where to begin with this one – if you haven’t watched it already – doctors orders its a must

First impressions sitting down with big grimm – he was thrown off by the musical aspect… now prior to seeing this film – Zydrate Anatomy was on my Spotify liked playlist for years and when I finally found the source of the song I have obsessed over for quite some time, I went into the film with high hopes. I too am a bit skeptical of musicals but the music and the mother fucking vocal TALENT baybeee in this film very quickly washed away any and all resentment. Now… maybe I should have heeded the warning of the “opera” title but I still expected some dialogue.

The whole movie was in song (โธโธเน๏นเนโธโธ)
That was a first for me and while I am definitely pro dialogue

The animated nature of the film and story made the operatic component quite complimentary to this form of story telling.
Some other gems from the film that I am obsessed:
(1) The overall set design / colorscheme
The palete of the film was *chef’s kiss*
It reminded me so much of the beginning scenes of House of 1000 Corpses – just that overall dark tone with hints of neon and a distorted tint in the editing ahhh. So unsettling and really bringing the gothic elements home.
I would love to live in this futuristic, Gotham-esq, hellscape.
Additionally, the set design and artwork in Shilo’s home was stunning. The portrait of her mother was very Haunted Mansion and she had the teenage bedroom of my dreamsssss โยฐโขโ๏ธ
(maybe minus the hospital plastic bed canopy…)
(2) The comic book story telling โงโหโช ๐โหโน
This movie was so well edited and with so many interesting characters – I really appreciated how they went into each character’s story. I would like to hear a bit more about the Largo brothers bc I feel like they were the only one’s left out of the details, but overall the film developed very nicely and I loved the used of comic animation to break up scenes. It really enhanced the story telling in my opinion.
(3) The stacked fucking cast list
Starting off with my horror crush who I am absolutely obsessed with:
Mister Choptop Mosley (ใ ยด ห `)
Absolute horror icon, can’t explain why I think Otis from House of 1000 Corpses is the bees knees, but this man is a star in every film – his animation and portral in this movie was fabulous
Next up – a guest appearance from JOANN JETT
I had to do a double take during her scene but what a fucking moment ahhhhhhhh ! Such a great cameo and fabulous contribution to this cast.
Last but certainly not least – the queen: โฎโหโParis Hiltonโหโโฎ
I didn’t think she could get more iconic but thank you Repo! for goth Paris Hilton – she is a scene stealer and horror icon in my โฅ๏ธ
Obviously everyone in this cast list is wildly talented – but these three were the ones I knew and loved going into this film and it made me so happy to see them in these roles.
(4) Blind Mag’s Character Arc
She IS the story !
In all seriousness, Blind Mag has to be my favorite character <3. In a story with so much corruption and greed, she is a bright light who truly cared about Shilo and her wellbeing. Not to mention her character aesthetic and fashion – Eyeconic

She is another scene stealer and very beautiful character arc. This movie has a fabulous ending that makes for one of the best scenes in the film – starting with Blind Mag’s reclamation
Overall I would highly recommend this one. If your skeptical of the musical/opera component I would just say to get the fuck over it because I have forewarned you and the story is fabulous.
